Vadvetjåkka National Park is located west of Lake Torneträsk, close to the Norwegian border, in Kiruna municipality. The park is remote and difficult to access. From the closest road access point, it’s an 11‑kilometre hike to the southern edge of the national park.
Hiking to the National Park
One way to reach Vadvetjåkka National Park is to hike from Kopparåsen along the E10, located about 20 kilometres from Abisko Tourist Station. There is a small parking area on the north side of the E10, opposite Kopparåsen railway station. From Kiruna to Kopparåsen, the distance is approximately 115 kilometres.
A 10‑kilometre summer trail starts at Kopparåsen. The trail is marked with stone cairns and occasionally with orange paint on stones and trees. At the end of the trail, you will find a bridge.
To enter the national park, you also need to ford a stream. Water levels can be high during periods of snowmelt or heavy rain, and the streams (known locally as jokkar) may be deep and fast‑flowing. It can sometimes be easier to find a crossing further upstream, outside the park, along the western boundary.
