Sarek National Park lies in a roadless mountain area in the Jokkmokk mountain region, in Jokkmokk Municipality, Norrbotten County. If you want to visit the national park, the towns of Jokkmokk or Gällivare are good starting points.
Entrance from the south
To reach Sarek from the south, the best starting point is Kvikkjokk/Huhttán. Buses operate between Jokkmokk and Kvikkjokk.
The fastest way into Sarek is to start your hike from Aktse. You can reach Aktse via the Kungsleden trail from Kvikkjokk, or by hiking from the car park at the bridge over the river Sijddoädno/Sitoälven.
The distance from Jokkmokk to Kvikkjokk is approximately 120 kilometres by car.
Entrance from the north
If you want to reach Sarek from the north, there are transport connections from both Gällivare and Jokkmokk.
You can travel to Gällivare by train, and then continue by bus. The bus station is located next to the railway station.
From Jokkmokk, you can take a bus via Porjus, continuing along Vägen västerut (“the Western Road”). Along this route you will also pass Kebnats/Gäbnásj, where you can begin your hike towards Sáltoluokta. You can also stop at Suorvvá and cross the dam. From there, you enter Sarek quickly and can reach the Sarek and Ähpár massifs within a day.
From Ritsem/Rijtjem, a tour boat crosses lake Áhkkájávrre. After the boat trip, the hike to the national park takes between half a day and one full day.
Flights and helicopter transport
From Kvikkjokk/Huhttán or Ritsem/Rijtjem, you can fly on scheduled helicopter routes to Stáloluokta in Padjelanta/Badjelánnda to begin your hike.
There are also helicopter taxi services available year‑round, landing outside the national parks.
From the airports in Gällivare and Luleå, there are bus connections to and from the mountain areas. Car rental is available in the main towns.
