The Seasons in Store Mosse National Park

Each season has its own charm in Store Mosse National Park.

In spring, when the days become longer and the sun returns, the bird feeding outside the naturum is usually very active. The whooper swans appear when the ice breaks up on Lake Kävsjön. The trails dry up and there is much to discover on a hike. The bog’s own spring flower, bog rosemary, shows its pink bells, and the yellow tufts of cottongrass stamens brighten the swamp forest. Bog myrtle flowers on bare branches and cranes trumpet. Liverleaf grows out at Svänö and black grouse can be heard from far away. Jack snipes and whimbrels display, and the cuckoo can be heard from all directions.

The pasturelands around Svänö and Lövö are paradisiacally beautiful in early summer. Butterflies fly everywhere and keep you company out on the bog. The bog is in bloom and is very beautiful when covered in the colours of the flowers. Summer is the time when most visitors come to Store Mosse and the naturum has many activities.

Autumn is the time of silence in the national park. Out on the bog the landscape feels vast and still, and a mushroom excursion can give good results. Passing migratory birds from the north can offer new nature experiences. The sphagnum mosses of the raised bog are colourful now.

In winter, Store Mosse is quiet and desolate. The feeding of golden eagles and white‑tailed eagles takes place from November through March. There is a good chance of seeing an eagle fly by. If there is enough snow, it may be possible to make ski tracks on parts of the bog. During full moon, cold weather and sufficient snow, moonlight skiing is arranged out on the quaking bog outside the naturum.
