Here you’ll find information on how to get to Stora Sjöfallet/StuorMuorkke National Park.
Stora Sjöfallet/Stuor Muorkke National Park is located on both sides of the river Stora Luleälven, and belongs to both Jokkmokk and Gällivare municipalities. To reach the national park, you can start from either Jokkmokk or Gällivare and travel by car or bus along Road 827 towards Ritsem.
You can travel to Gällivare by train or by air. The bus station is located next to the train station.
To reach Jokkmokk by train, the nearest railway station is Murjek. You can also fly to Luleå and travel on by bus.
By bus
The bus route that reaches the national park along Vägen västerut (“the Western Road”) is accessible from both Jokkmokk and Gällivare. The final stop is Ritsem Mountain Station.
From Jokkmokk, you can take a bus towards Porjus or Gällivare and get off at Ritsemvägskäl (Road 45) to change buses for Ritsem.
From Gällivare, you can travel directly to Ritsem without transfers.
Along Vägen västerut, you will also pass Kebnats/Gäbnásj, where you can begin your hike to Sáltoluokta.
You can also choose to get off at Suorvvá and cross the dam. From here, you enter the south‑western parts of the national park quickly.
At the bus stop at Stora Sjöfallet, you can visit naturum Laponia, the waterfall Stuormuorkkegårttje, and several nearby day‑hiking routes.
At the bus stop at Vákkudavárre/Vakkutavare, you will find the Swedish Tourist Association's (STF) mountain cabin. From here, you can follow the Kungsleden trail northwards.

From Ritsem/Rijtjem, a boat crosses Áhkkájávrre. After the boat trip, you reach Stora Sjöfallet/Stuor Muorkke National Park by hiking across the river Vuojatädno, at the foot of the Áhkká massif.
Flights and helicopter transport
From Kvikkjokk/Huhttán or Ritsem/Rijtjem, you can fly on scheduled helicopter routes to the Akkastugorna cabins, near the border of the national park, to begin your hike.
Helicopter taxi services can also be booked, with landings outside the national park.
From the airports in Gällivare and Luleå, there are bus connections to and from the mountain areas.
