The Seasons in Muddus/Muttos
The cabins in Muddus/Muttos nationalpark are open all year round. From May to October you can hike in the national park. In winter you can ski between the cabins.
Spring-winter
In March and April the sun begins to warm. Migratory birds return and in the mountain Sámi communities preparations begin for moving west to the summer grazing lands. This is a good time for skiing; take the opportunity to ski between the cabins.
Spring
In spring the calves are born. It is a sensitive period and the reindeer must not be disturbed. The sun warms, the streams begin to open up and the ice becomes weak.
Early summer
In June the snow has melted. The last ice breaks up and the spring floods rush through the rivers. The reindeer need peace and quiet to regain their strength. The Sámi communities repair fences and enclosures. The first calf-marking begins.
Summer
It is July and the mosquitoes have arrived. The ground begins to dry and the vegetation takes off. Calf-marking is underway and the cloudberries ripen. July is the peak season for hiking tourism. The reindeer seek out the mires to cool down.
Late summer
August is often a good time for hiking. The mosquitoes decrease and the first yellow leaves appear. It is the season for berry picking, fishing and gathering hay. The reindeer begin to move in search of mushrooms and feed well before winter. The first cold nights arrive.
Autumn
Nature is dressed in autumn colours. Ptarmigan calls can be heard again and they get their first white feathers. It is moose hunting season and reindeer slaughter. Hikers usually enjoy good weather but cold nights. The small lakes get their first layer of ice.
Autumn-winter
The first snow arrives. The bears go into hibernation and the Sámi communities begin gathering the reindeer to separate them into winter groups. The reindeer are moved to the winter grazing lands and meat is prepared for winter.
Winter
This is our longest season. Winter lasts from December well into March. The days are short and blue, and there is northern light. The white snow brightens the landscape. On the mires in Muddus/Muttos, the snow is especially deep. The reindeer follow the hanging lichen.
