Activities and sights in the national park

There are several paths and hiking trails in Muddus/Muttos National Park. Mansonstugan cabin is a good starting point for day trips into the forest landscape of Muddus/Muttos. From here, you can hike up onto some of the nearby small hills or explore the old‑growth forest. The red timber cabin, with its three beds, is small, but there are good tent pitches nearby.

From Mansonstugan cabin, you can hike both Lilla stigslingan and Stora stigslingan. Both trails pass Muddusagahtjaldak (Muttosfallet) and the ravine Måskosgårsså. Måskosgårsså is a dry, steep ravine that suddenly opens in the forest landscape, once carved out by massive meltwater flows from the inland ice.

Stora stigslingan also takes you to Muttosluoppalstugan cabin, Mansonstugan cabin, and Nammavárre, one of the coziest and most atmospheric places in the entire national park. At Nammavárre there is a timber cabin with three beds.

At Muttosluoppal, large mires meet the forest. Muttosluoppalstugan cabin is located on a narrow ridge that winds between the wetlands. A short distance from the cabin there is a birdwatching tower, offering views over lakes, vast mires and distant mountains on the horizon.

Everywhere in Muddus/Muttos you can see traces of older forest fires. The most recent large fire occurred in 2006. From the Skájdde entrance, it is a couple of kilometres’ walk to the burn area, where you can follow the fire’s path and see how the forest is slowly regenerating.
