Activities and sights in the national park

Gotska Sandön National Park has several hiking trails that take you to different parts of the island. Bredsandsslingan leads you to the north‑western part of the island, a landscape constantly shaped by wind and waves. The island is continuously influenced by sea currents, waves and strong winds. At Bredsandsudde, you can clearly see how the island changes from one year to the next.

Bredsandsudde is also an excellent place for birdwatching, especially for seabirds, and large numbers of gulls and terns can often be seen here.

If you walk Höga Åsenslingan, you will reach the island’s most impressive sand dune. The ridge stretches across the island from west to east and reaches a height of 42 metres at its highest point.

There are several lighthouses on Gotska Sandön. The northern lighthouse, inaugurated in 1859, is still in operation today, and the lighthouse site is now a protected historic monument. Inside the lighthouse, you can visit the exhibition Fyrliv.

Around 1900, lighthouse keeper Karl Bourgström built a cabin on Gotska Sandön. The cabin, located on the southern part of the island, is not open to visitors, but there are tables and benches outside. You can reach the cabin by walking along Högalandsleden.

At Säludden, you can see seals at close range. Just inland from Säludden, there is a viewing hide that allows you to observe resting seals from a safe and respectful distance.
